Discover Some Little Known Child Safety Hazards In Your Home
With the big things out of the way you can focus on having fun being a parent. There are some little things that can have a big impact on your child’s safety at home. They may be things you never thought of. To help, a list is being offered to give you a heads up of items that are confirmed deadly or dangerous to children!
Basic Child Safety Checklist
- Small & sharp items hurt millions of kids each year! The razor you shave with can cause a sever cut to your child. Never throw broken glass in a waste basket where a child could pick it up. Be vigilant!
- Paper clips, coins, cigarette butts, dust balls, staples or anything smaller than an inch and a half can be responsible for a sever choking situation. Kids have pulled off television or stereo knobs and choked on them as well.
- Fans have hurt many a little fingers! If you must use a fan, place it up high and be sure that its electrical cord cannot be reached by your child.
- Each year thousands of kids ingest poisons from inside the home. Young kids don’t understand the difference between things they can drink and chemicals. Even house plants can be poisonous. Have easy access to telephone numbers for poison control in your area and anything that can present a toxic situation should be handled immediately.
- The medicine cabinet should be the first thin you lock. Between cosmetics, deodorants and medications, it takes a small dose of prevention which will add up to a pound of cure. Always keep Ipecac syrup in your home… It can save your child’s life!
- Scalds can happen in the bathroom and from hot foods. Always check the internal temperatures of bottles and food before allowing your child to drink or eat it. Children do not react as quickly to ‘hot’ as an adult or older child and can quickly scald their mouths.
- Plastic bags of all shapes and sizes pose a real suffocation hazard. Children love to hide and they can easily put the bag over their head which in turn can lead to suffocation. Don’t take that risk by allowing a plastic bag to lie around.
- Many children get hurt on stairs each year. Just as many adults get hurt stepping over safety gates while holding a sleeping baby. Use safety gates but make sure they are easy to pass through by adults!
