Essentials to Baby Proofing

Baby proofing your home is essential. Once you bring baby home it becomes apparent that there are many dangers lurking in every room of the home.

It is best to begin baby proofing in the nursery and make sure that everything from your crib, mattress, changing table and toys meet current safety standards. In the past decade, childproofing regulations for cribs have changed and it is therefore recommended that a new crib be purchased every time.

When shopping for cribs make sure that you purchase one that doesn’t have foot holds that can be used for climbing later on and that the slats are close enough together as to not pose an entrapment hazard!

Easy Tips for Baby Proofing the Crib

Since your baby will spend a lot of their time in the crib it is important to follow a few baby proofing rules. First, make sure that the mattress fits tightly. You should not be able to fit more than one finger between the mattress and crib frame.

Second, the mattress needs to be firm which is recommended as a preventative for SIDS. Also, keep the crib free of heavy pillows, comforters, blankets or stuffed animals that can cause suffocation. In the first few weeks and months you may want to use nothing but a sleep positioning pillow and a lightweight cover.
