No matter how tempted you are to turn your infant seat around- DON’T!

Follow car seat instructions thoroughly and never use old parts or try to concoct new ways to install a car seat.  If your seat is missing a component contact the manufacturer or purchase a new one that fits your vehicle.  Remember, they must stay rear facing until they are 1 year and 20 pounds!

  1. Your child will spend a lot of time in their crib!  Make sure the bars are no more than 2 3/8 inches apart and test the mattress to ensure it is snug in the frame.  You should not be able to slide your hand in the space.  No fluffy pillows, snuggly stuffed animals or comforters are recommended as many infant suffocate because of decorations like these.
  2. If you are using any second hand baby products – call the manufacturer to make sure they haven’t been recalled.  You can also call 1-800-638-2722 or visit www.cpsc.org to verify that the baby safety products you are using are safe!
  3. Babies may not move much but they can place small items in their mouth and they will.  Make sure all small objects and pieces of plastic including balloons or plastic bags are no where in reach.  You should also be certified in CPR.
  4. It is recommended to place babies on their back when sleeping.  This helps to prevent SIDS.  If your child is rolling you can use approved wedges to keep them in the proper sleeping position.  Remember even toddlers can accidentally pull covers or blankets over their face and suffocate.
  5. A very important child proofing rules is to never leave your baby along on a changing table or bed.  They can easily roll right off and get seriously injured.  Even if you don’t think your baby is capable; it is best to never chance it!
  6. Don’t allow people to smoke around your baby.  Homes and cars should be smoke free!
  7. We all love the sun, but it is not appropriate to use sunscreen on babies which means it is better to keep them out of the sun.  If you must go outside with them, make sure to cover their skin with light clothing and avoid long exposure that can over heat them easily.
  8. Any of your baby seats, high chairs or other equipment that is equipped with a harness should always be used.  Keep in mind there is a reason they are there!
  9. If you are an avid bike rider and cant wait for your baby to tag along, make sure you use approved bike seats.  They should be mounted properly and always outfit your baby with a helmet.  Many babies are injured each year on the back of a bike!
  10. Guns are dangerous.  Many people keep them in the home and if you do you must vigilantly ensure that they are locked up and never stored loaded!
